Some small solutions for people having problems with their laptops.
Well, have you ever had problems with your laptop, such as the system shutting off without any apparent reason? Or something like your computer getting so hot you’re amazed it hasn’t melted yet? I have. And I’ve searched like a madman for solutions for these problems. Here are a small few of them. I know they aren’t extra-ordinary, but they can be handy in those irritating situations.
- Try pressing ‘Ctrl+Alt+Del(ete)’ on your keyboard and open the ‘Processes’ tab. After that, click the sub-tab ‘Mem Usage’ so it sorts the processes from high to low memory usage. If some processes are abnormally high (70,000 K +), especially if you don’t recognize the problem straight away, try running a search on Google with the image name. Maybe you’ve got a virus or spyware program sucking up your memory.
- Clear up some disk space. Your computer needs some space to store all its temporary files. If your hard drive is (nearly) full, the system can’t find a place to store its data and can slow down or even freeze. Delete some unused or old files in your folders.
- Empty your Recycling Bin. The files in there may be small but a lot of them take up a lot of space.
- Update your drivers. Maybe your pc has outdated drivers for its hardware. To do this, open your start menu and right-click on the ‘My Computer’ shortcut and select ‘Properties’. Then select the tab ‘Hardware’ and then click the ‘Device Manager’ button. Then check the names of your important harware, such as a display driver or a network adapter, and run a search on Google. Download any driver updates for your hardware.
- Elevate your computer. Maybe your computer doesn’t get enough airflow through the ventilation ports. Try placing your laptop on some small items such as lego-blocks, pieces of cardboard or even some folded-up paper. Try and raise your system at least half an inch / 1cm of your working surface.
- Check your power supply. Maybe it isn’t plugged in correctly, fully, or the power cord or adapter could be damaged.
- Check your CPU temperature. Maybe you’ve got a CPU-fan problem or your air-intake is blocked with dust. You can download a program to check your temperature. If you do have a too-high temperature, take your pc to a repair shop. A check-up shouldn’t cost that much, and if you would have a problem a repair isn’t that big a deal. But be careful, if the price for a repair is too high, you might as well buy a new computer.
- System shutting down without any reason? You might have a virus, or you have a too high CPU temperature. A too high temperature of your CPU causes your motherboard to do a safety-shut down. Check number 7 for help on CPU temperatures. If your problem could be virus-related, try downloading some free anti-virus software like AVG free. Run a scan and if a problem is found, run a search on Google with your results.
Thanks for taking the time to read through this! I hope it helped!
